Chapter tune: ZZ Top – Rough boy
Warning: Some profanity
“Say, who is that girl over there? I haven’t seen her in here before”
“I don’t know bro, haven’t seen her either.” Xander replied. “Looks like a prude though if you ask me. More work to be done. And I’m not into work at all, you know it. I prefer girls like Zelda or Tamara, much easier”
Been there, done that, Jared thought as he already moved in close proximity of his target.
“Hi, I don’t remember seeing you here before. And I’d remember seeing a face like yours…” Jared knew all the lines that worked on the ladies. Hell, he must have used every one of them a hundred times. And they had yet to fail.
Rose laughed awkwardly. She didn’t know how to talk to guys like that one and he sure was a forward one. She couldn’t decide if she wanted him to leave her alone or not. Something about him was seducing and scaring her at the same time. He has pretty eyes, she thought – that’s all she could think.
“So what’s your name?” he asked.
“Nice to meet you doll, I’m Jared.” His attention then shifted to another area of the bar. “Look, I have to go talk to someone. I do hope to see you again sometime, pretty Rose.”
In mere seconds, Emma approached Rose.
“Was he hitting on you? Oh, no no no girl, you gotta stay clear of him. That’s Jared Frio and everyone in this town knows, he’s bad news. His last fling, Claire Ursine, was a living wreck after they broke up. I don’t know what happened exactly, but now she’s holed up in her house for a couple of months and no-one has seen her since. I tell you, he destroyed her.”
“We were just talking, nothing happened” Rose tried to sound convincing.
“Ok well, as long as you know” Emma didn’t want to sound too bossy. “Don’t get me wrong, I grew up with him and his brother, we’re kind of friends. He’s not a criminal, but he can get really mean. Just be careful, that’s all I’m saying. Anyway, you know that he’s working at the bistro right? Like, we’re co-workers.”
“No, he never mentioned that…” Rose tried to hide the unexpected smile on her face.
“Yes, though he comes and goes as he pleases, he’s in a sort of relationship with our boss, Molly. I don’t know what’s their deal, but they’re ready to kill each other one moment and the next one they’re making out like no tomorrow.”
Rose felt a little jealous. What was I thinking, that he instantly fell in love with me? Of course he’d wanna get to know the new girl.
She spotted Molly in the bar.
Although it was obvious that she was a little past her prime, Molly was still a beautiful woman. She had a killer body and a flair that few women had.
She’s so different than when we are at work, Rose thought. Of course Jared would want to hook up with her, she’s a real woman. Not a stupid girl like me.
Why did the sight of him with Molly bothered her so much? She didn’t even know him!
She realized that her thoughts were filled with bitterness. Did she really start to fall in love with who appeared to be the local bad boy?
Then, like clockwork, exactly what Emma had mentioned, happened before everyone’s eyes:
“What the fuck Molly? Are you seriously thinking of giving the promotion to that Christopher dude? He’ll never be as good as me and you know it!”
“Mon amour, you know I can’t give you a promotion when you go MIA like you did for almost two weeks. I need someone who takes his job seriously and that’s Christopher.”
“You fucked that little weirdo, didn’t you? Goddamnit Molly, I left to attend those classes you wanted me to take. You know, to get better at my job?”
“Ok, calm down. If that’s true I’ll consider you for promotion next time. And next time you talk to me like that, I’ll send you to work at the diner for a month. Now come home with me you angry beast, I’ve missed you.”
But Jared wouldn’t have it. He left Molly then and there and went to have some more drinks at the bar.
Rose was stunned and confused. “I guess Emma was right. I don’t know what kind of situations he’s into, but this doesn’t look good.” Still, she kinda felt drawn to him, like a moth to a flame .
The night went on. Maybe Rose was a bit over-emotional that moment, maybe she had too many Cherry Casanovas to drink, but the last thing she remembered was this:
