Chapter tune: Heart – Alone
Warning: This chapter is a bit long, a bit picture heavy, a bit silly and a bit nsfw (nothing too much of course) towards the end; just a heads up! 🙂 Thank you for reading! ❤
A couple of weeks had passed, and things went back to normal. Skye had fully recovered from her cold, Owen had returned from his parents’ house in Riverview, and the band had started performing again.
Vito had arranged for a series of shows in Bridgeport, which was a pretty impressive achievement, as he had already repeated to them for about a dozen times.
“Well, here we are kids… the Carlton” Vito said as soon as they arrived at ther hotel “Might not be what it used to be back in the day, but it’s still one of the best.”
The band would stay in Bridgeport for two weeks, during which they’d perform at local bars and go to a couple of meetings with album producers. This time Vito had really outdone himself, and there was a serious chance that this could be their first step into the limelight.
The only drawback to staying at the Carlton this time of year, was that there were only four rooms available instead of five. Skye would stay alone, there was no question at that, while Jesse and Dylan each called dibs on a room of their own. That left Owen and Vito sharing, but they hoped the place would be large enough for both of them to stay comfortably.
“I think Vito and I should at least take one of the two larger rooms, are you ok with that?” Owen said to Jesse when they were inside, figuring out where to stay. “Hey man… I’m talking to you”
“Uh, yeah man… I’m listening” Jesse replied, although it was obvious he wasn’t.
The truth was, he had been pretty distracted that day, and it was because of Skye. For once, he loved seeing her in that tight leather jacket she wore; but most of all it was obvious, at least to him, that for some reason she was looking a little sad since they arrived at the hotel – although she was trying her best to hide it.
On their first night, the band would play at the “Bridgeport Sports Zone”. It was certainly an upgrade from the dive bars they usually performed in at Sunset Valley.
Despite the bar not being exactly packed, it was one of their best appearances. Everyone was in great shape and Jesse, in particular, was feeling pretty inspired that night; he was seriously killing it with his guitar solos.
After the show, they decided to relax and have some drinks there. After all, this was a good chance for networking too, since that was the kind of place that often attracted minor celebrities.
A few fellow musicians took an interest in talking with the band members, and everyone was praising their performance.
While Dylan, Owen and Vito were happily engaging themselves into this small taste of success, Jesse took the chance to talk to Skye.
“Hey” he said. He usually was far more eloquent around women he liked, but she had a way of making him feel nervous, especially after that night they spent together.
“Hi Jesse” she said cheerfully – but keeping her distance at the same time “I wanted to talk to you too. Great performance tonight, those solos of yours were amazing”
Shit, she’s so beautiful… but she’s really doing this… pretending that nothing happened between us, he thought. Deep down, although convenient, this was bothering him. He was hoping that this trip would be a chance for them to repeat that amazing night at her place. It was like the intoxicating effect of a strong drug had passed for good and he was willing to do anything to get that same feeling back.
“Thanks… you were awesome too” he said “but then again, you’re always awesome.”
Skye laughed. “Thank you Jesse”
“You look really beautiful tonight… and I can’t help but keep thinking that your room is right next to mine… what do you say I swing by tonight? We could make something to remember Bridgeport by”
“Jesse… are you flirting with me?”
“Yeah… is that so bad?”
“Yes! I thought we had a deal… and you know I hate flirting, so stop it. You know, there are plenty of girls here in Bridgeport that could make you remember it the way you want to” she said while barely smiling, not wanting to make things too awkward between them.
“Well, we could always make a new deal… whatever happens in Bridgeport, stays in Bridgeport…” he winked at her.
“Wow, you’re really pushing this. I thought I made it clear I’m not interested” she spat, quickly losing her patience – not an uncommon thing for her.
Jesse felt his face burning with embarrassment. Shit… no dice. Quickly, say something to fix this, he thought. “I’m kidding, obviously! Huh, you should see your face! Classic!”
“I really hope so” Skye muttered, apparently not convinced “I’m sorry if I sounded a bit harsh…”
Jesse kept wondering why she made him feel so self-conscious. He was usually pretty confident with women. Then again, he really didn’t have to try so hard or, if it looked like he had to, he never bothered eventually.
However, he realized he had to stop trying, at least for now. He didn’t want to pressure her; plus, there was that small bet detail. He was desperately in need of a distraction though, but couldn’t seem to spot anyone that fit the bill.
Just before he was ready to admit his defeat for tonight, someone managed to catch his attention.
“Whoa, look at that rack, man” he told Dylan “I’m calling dibs on the blonde!”
“Whatever, I was gonna call dibs on the redhead anyway” Dylan replied, clearly lying.
Owen seemed pretty unimpressed, as usual. “Dibs? What are you both, seven? It’s a good thing I’m sharing the room with Vito, or I bet I’d have nowhere to sleep tonight”
“Well dude, that’s cause you never call dibs fast enough” Dylan replied.
As soon as the blond girl sat at the bar alone, Jesse knew this was his cue. He swiftly went closer. “Hi there” he told her “I couldn’t help but notice how brighter the room got when you entered. Name’s Jesse by the way”
“Hi ‘Jesse by the way’, I’m Alex.”
“So… Alex. Can I buy you a drink?”
She stood up and checked Jesse out. “You’re cute. I’d say yes but I already have one”
“That’s impressive… and here I was, thinking it’s nearly impossible to get a drink in this bar”
“Really? That’s super weird. I come here often and the bartender always makes my drinks at once”
“Well, can’t say that I blame the slimy bastard, it’s practically impossible to ignore you”
Alex giggled. It was obvious that she was warming up to Jesse, something not so unexpected from his experience.
Meanwhile, Dylan stepped into closer proximity of the redhead.
“I’m Dylan… What’s your name?”
“Nancy” she said indifferently.
“Nice to meet you Nancy. I see your friend over there is occupied with my friend and knowing him, this could take a while. Mind if I keep you some company in the meantime?”
“Sorry, I don’t hang around with kids.”
“Kids? But we’re probably the same age!”
“Yeah, I don’t do same age. Go away!”
He left the spot disappointed, but not without letting Vito know he had a shot instead. Vito, naturally, grabbed that rare chance.
Just when Dylan was ready to call it a night and get back to the hotel, a pale looking brunette approached him from behind.
“You’re very handsome” she whispered into his ear.
“Whoa, you scared me for a moment there!”
“I scared you? You’re a powerful vampire!”
“What? I’m not a vampire babe, in fact, I don’t even think vampires ex-…”
“Oh, kiss me you majestic creature of the night!”
That girl was clearly batshit crazy, but since there was no better alternative, Dylan decided to go for it.
“Wow, you’re so sexy” Dylan panted, after quite a long makeout session.
“What? What did I say?”
“I offer you my blood. Feed from me, my dark lord!”
“Oh, we’re there again… sure, what do you say we go to my hotel room for that? I can’t do it in public, I have, um… issues” Dylan finally decided to go along with it.
“I would follow you anywhere! Take me to your shadowy chambers and swallow me into darkness!”
“Um… sure? Let me call a cab and we’re outta here”
One by one, the bar patrons started leaving. Dylan and Vito had both left with their ladies, and it looked like Jesse was soon about to do the same.
Seeing Jesse with another girl, Skye felt a sting in her heart. I should stop torturing myself… being just friends is for the best. He was pretty quick to rebound anyway… it’s not that this wouldn’t happen sooner or later, she thought.
“Looks like we’re the only ones that haven’t found someone in this bar” Owen approached her, waking her up from her thoughts.
“Yes” she smiled “seems like you’re left without a room though… what are you gonna do?” she asked.
“It’s okay, I’ll probably sleep in the hallway or the lobby… it’s happened before”
“What? Are you serious? No way I’m gonna leave you like this. You can come to my room, it’s pretty big anyway”
“Wow, are you sure? It’s fine really, I don’t want to unsettle you…”
“Oh, you should know I won’t take no for an answer.”
“Okay then, thanks Skye! You’re really the best. I mean it” Owen beamed.
Back in Jesse’s hotel room, things were getting pretty hot and heavy. Alex had a killer body which turned Jesse on really fast.
This kind of life was everything Jesse dreamed of when he decided to become a musician. Going to different places all the time, sleeping with beautiful girls he knew he’d never have to see again… that was the dream.
And tonight, an alluring woman was once again in his bed, proving him right – or so he thought. Because when Alex jerked her blond hair backwards in an attempt to further seduce Jesse with her beauty, images of his night with Skye flooded his head.
He realized Alex was gorgeous and hot as hell, sure, but it wasn’t her. She didn’t have the smell of her skin, or the sound of her voice. And he missed her, apparently more than he’d like to admit, even to himself. He wondered if she missed him too. There was something there that night, it couldn’t have been just my imagination, he thought.
“Are you ok? Why did you stop kissing me?” Alex’s voice brought him back to reality.
“What? Oh… I, uh, got distracted… sorry”
“You got distr…. ugh, just keep doing what you were doing” she said annoyed.
But Jesse had lost all appetite for the sexy blonde currently laying in his bed. He sat at the edge of it, with a brooding expression.
“Hey, what’s up? Certainly not what’s supposed to be up” Alex nagged.
“Sorry babe, I swear this has never happened before… just give me a sec…”
“Awww… does wittle Jesse not want to play?” she said in a childish tone and traced her finger along Jesse’s thigh.
“Shit… okay stop it. I’m really sorry, but it’s not going to happen. You can spend the night here if you want though, it’s pretty late…”
Alex stood up furiously and started getting dressed.
“You know, if you have issues like that, you shouldn’t invite girls over! Now my night and this outfit have gone to waste!”
“Whoa, relax, I said it’s the first time. But it’s not your fault, really, it’s me. I’m so sorry… Can I at least call you a cab?”
“No, piss off! I’m going to a club, maybe someone else will appreciate what you couldn’t. I’m not going to waste any more of my time on you!” she screamed, and stormed out.
Jesse couldn’t care less about letting Alex go. He felt relieved actually, as he realized there was nothing he’d rather do than stay alone and think about Skye. Or, more accurately, there were several things he’d rather do, but they all involved her; and she made it clear there was no chance of turning them into reality.
The early hours found him awake on the bed, with a cigarette being the extension of his hand.
Fuck, Skye… what the hell have you done to me?
