Chapter tune: Thunder – Don’t wait for me
A/N: Hello! 😀 Yep, it’s me, I’ve returned from the shadows and I bring you a whole new story update! I know it’s super late and that I’ve been very unproductive these past weeks, but please don’t hate me! 😭 Sooo *ahem* Skye’s backstory is over and now we’re back to the present days – finally! Thank you so much for reading! ❤
Jesse’s parents had not heard that Skye knew the man that suddenly took over their tv screen. With just one glance from her, Jesse knew she preferred it that way so he promptly took her out of there to be alone.
“Baby, are you okay? You’ve been silent since we left my parents’ house and well… I’m worried about you. Who was that guy?” he asked her as soon as they entered her apartment.
She once again stayed silent. “Shit… you know what” Jesse told her tenderly “let me go fix you a bath. It’ll calm you down from whatever it was that upset you.”
He stretched that last part of his words, in an attempt to let Skye know that he still waited for her to open up. It probably went unnoticed on the surface, but somehow got her to finally talk.
“No it’s… it’s alright. Will you sit with me for a while?”
“Sure…” Jesse replied. He suddenly felt bad about pushing her, although they both knew she would have to come clean about her past eventually.
Skye sat on the floor and Jesse followed her lead, gently pulling her closer to him.
“Are you sure you’re ready?” he asked her in a protective way.
“I might never be ready… but I want to tell you.” she muttered.
Jesse’s emotions took a wild ride while Skye told him everything, from miserable to disgusted to enraged. But she did leave three “small” details out. The one that hurt the most – strangely not the abuse part, but being betrayed by the only person she thought she could truly trust -, the one that could make Jesse crazy – which was the flash drive part – and the one she didn’t want to deal with in the present day, which was the fact that she helped the police arrest her step father and now he was probably out on a rampage looking for her.
“Fuck… baby…” Jesse muttered, not sure how he should react. He figured he had to remain calm on the outside, although his real feelings had settled to distressed and furious – mainly the last one. He could not believe that the woman he loved had to go through all this shit in her life alone. Alone…, he thought to himself. But there was that ex-boyfriend too. I wonder what happened to him. Shit, I shouldn’t think about that! She’s with me now and she needs me!
“It’s okay…” she said “it’s better now actually… I’m better. It’s over now.”
“But could he be out there looking for you now that he’s out?”
“No… I don’t think so. I was just shaken that I saw him again like that, that’s all” she lied.
“Fuck… are you sure baby? Before we left tonight, my dad told me that he met him once. I mean, he just got in a bar fight with him – and kicked his ass – but the guy and his gang found him later and beat him up, almost to death. That’s why he reacted like he did when he saw the news.”
“He did that to your dad? Well… that’s Sinbad alright, the apple of everyone’s eye” Skye said, almost to herself.
“So… that guy. The one you were dating” Jesse started talking after a short pause.
“What about him?”
“Didn’t he do anything after… you know… after what happened?”
“He… well, he didn’t know” Skye lied again “I guess he took off too after the trial, or went to juvie. He was way more involved than I was.”
“Did you love him?”
“At the time… I think so. But we were just kids and well, it’s all in the past” she whispered. “Jesse… why are you asking me this?”
Normally, a question like that would make her angry for being interrogated, but she was feeling too exhausted, too defeated to even care.
“I’m sorry baby… shit. I have no idea. That’s not what I should be asking you. In fact, I shouldn’t be asking you anything more. You’ve had enough for one day. What I should be doing is fixing you this bath, and then go find that fucking son of a bitch and kill him with my own hands” he muttered while clenching his fists.
“No… Jesse… please don’t do anything stupid. You don’t know what he’s capable of.”
“Are you saying I can’t do it?” Jesse’s eyes sparkled with fury and the delight of a possible upcoming challenge.
“Well, I’m not going to let you make a bet on it, if that’s what you’re thinking” Skye half heartedly smiled.
“But” she added “I could agree to get into that bath if you agree to join me”
“Are you sure? Baby, you know I rarely say no to propositions like that but I really think you need to rest.”
“What I need is you… in that tub with me” she whispered suggestively and gave him a loving kiss.
Her kisses went from gentle to hungry, almost desparate. Jesse had learned that side of her now, and although mad about what he had just found out, he was also glad she had finally let him in. If this was what she needed to cope, he would always be the one to help her cope.
Their burning lust for each other didn’t let them to even make it past the bathroom door.
The next day, Jesse had to leave Skye’s apartment for the day. Apparently Dylan needed him to talk about the future of the band. Despite his hesitation to leave Skye alone, she reassured him that she would be fine, that she was way past her initial shock.
Jesse and Dylan finally decided to not give up on the band yet and, since Vito was still out of town, try to set up a few auditions on their own. It was just like they had first started out anyway, even if that sounded a bit sad after all this time.
After some hard work, they were finally ready to call it a day. Jesse was psyched about the prospect of starting fresh and couldn’t wait to go to Skye’s apartment and tell her all about it. He rang the bell but there was no reply. When he tried to call her, her cellphone was off.
After a couple of more tries, he went downstairs, where he spotted Mrs White.
“Hey you!” she yelled at him “Are you the one that comes and goes in and out of blondie’s apartment?”
“Yeah… hi Mrs White. We’ve met actually, my name is Jesse. Is she in there?”
Mrs White ignored his question.
“Do you know what she did? She didn’t pay this month’s rent, and she told me to give you this envelope! Do I look like a goddamn mailman?”
“What..? She gave you a letter… for me?”
“Mrs White… Glenda. You look nothing like a mailman. Now if you could give me that letter and let me inside her apartment for a while, I can pay you for the month.”
“Ah, then why didn’t you just say so love? You gotta pay for two months though, this is how it goes around here. Okay?”
When Jesse entered the apartment, he felt terrified. There was nothing he wanted to do less than read that letter and yet, the only thing his hands seemed to be able to do was rip that envelope apart and bring it straight to his sight.
When you read this, I’ll already be away. Last night’s events and our talk made me realize that Travis is the one I’ve always loved. I don’t think I would have acted on it, but he contacted me today and we’re moving away together. I’m sorry that I lead you on and that it had to happen this way. You still owe me three favors, but I’m going to ask for just two. One, don’t look for me and two, forget me. Good luck with your band.
Jesse suddenly felt like he had flown out of his own body and watched all this happen to somebody else. He couldn’t believe it. He didn’t know what to believe. No, something was off. This couldn’t possibly be real.
Almost short of breath, he once again rushed downstairs.
“Hey um… Mrs White! Can I ask you something?”
“What do you want?” she sneered “Can’t you see I’m busy?”
“Please Glenda, just one question. Did Skye… um, you know… blondie, did she say anything else before she left? Did she look scared or something like that”
“How would I know? Do I look like a goddamn detective?”
“Please Glenda, you gotta help me out here. I have to know what happened!” Jesse desperately cried.
“She left with that boy, didn’t you read the letter? I knew she was no good!”
“What? You… you read it? And what boy?”
“Of course I read it! She could have been taking drugs from you, how would I know? And I don’t want no drugs in my building!”
Jesse was starting to lose his temper, but figured he shouldn’t show it if he wanted answers.
“What boy are you talking about Mrs White?”
“That man she left with, about your age – he was looking like a junkie if you ask me!”
My age…, Jesse thought. It couldn’t be her step father, no way. That guy looked old.
“Did it look like he forced her to go with him?”
“How should I know? I’m no goddamn-”
“Please Mrs White, it’s important!”
“Well all I know is that she was holding his arm when they left! Of course she would, I bet she couldn’t stand straight cause she was high or whatever it is you people call it!”
Jesse hearing this, ran upstairs fast – despite Mrs White yelling that he should pay her again to enter the apartment one more time.
He started searching frantically her closets and drawers, throwing everything on the floor and making a mess in that place, just to find something, anything that would hint that what he was living right now wasn’t true. That it was a bad dream. That she would soon come back.
Exhausted, he threw himself on her couch, still holding on to that letter that ended it all just like that.
The loud noices of his beating heart echoed through the silence like a drumroll, finally making him realize the ugly truth: It was over. It was all a lie.
“How did you even find me?” Skye asked Travis as they were heading towards the town’s end.
“I always knew where you were, since Bridgeport, back then. Ever since… what I did to you, I made it my mission to protect you. But now, as I already told you, word was you were in Sunset Valley. It was only a matter of time until he’d find you. The place I’m taking you is safe though… for now”
“Don’t even think that this will make me forgive you, just so you know. I just don’t want him or his family to get hurt because of me…” Skye said and a tear streamed down her cheek.
“I know… I know.” Travis muttered as his car took the last turn out of Sunset Valley.
