1.22 – The Raven house

Chapter tune: W.A.S.P. – Hold on to my heart

Warning: A little blood and creepiness

Jared woke up from the ground where he had passed out for who knows how long. What the hell happened, he thought.

As he finally managed to stand on his two feet, he felt a mindnumbing headache. But as he would come to realize, this was the least of his problems.

Where the hell am I?

“Please get out of the room miss” the nurse said sharply to Rose, as she was trying to catch a tiny glimpse of Jared lying on the hospital bed, covered in blood.

She felt helpless. Hours ago they were together, almost drowning in bliss and now… something went horribly wrong – again.

But all she could do was wait. After what felt like eternity, a doctor came out of the room.

“Are you a family member?” he asked, but before Rose got any chance to reply he added “Ah well, it doesn’t really matter. I’m just obligated to ask, that’s all. These rules are too strict sometimes, don’t you think?”

“Ehm” he continued, seeing that Rose was starting to lose her patience. “He has lost a lot of blood, a couple of ribs were broken and he has suffered a serious concussion. We haven’t been able to wake him up from the coma. I have to admit that… things are not looking good right now.”

Rose felt like the earth beneath her feet was shuttering to tiny pieces. Her heart followed right after. “So… he’s still in danger?”

“Yes, he could still die anytime” the doctor said plainly, without any sign of sympathy. “All we can do is wait now. But please don’t lose hope miss! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to take this” he said while picking up his phone.

“Rose? Are you alright girl, what happened?” Emma’s voice sounded in the room. Emma and Connor had arrived at Twinbrook, putting a pause to their honeymoon in Isla Paradiso. Connor didn’t speak, shaken from the news that his bother’s life could possibly end at any minute.

“Emma…Connor, I’m so sorry!” Rose said, barely holding her tears “the doctor just said he could… I don’t even want to say the word! And it’s all my fault!” she suddenly started sobbing uncontrollably.

“Yes, we heard that…Oh Rosie, I can’t believe it!” Emma said while hugging her. “Do you want some water? Calm down and then you’ll tell us what happened, ok?”

Jared spent a pretty great deal of time trying to find out where he was. It was dark everywhere and the only trees scattered around were stripped off their leaves, looking almost dead. The fact that not a single soul had passed by, only added to the eeriness of the place. As he was walking, he saw a female figure a little further from him.

“Um… excuse me, can you help me? I think I’m lost!” he yelled at her. She slowly turned around as he approached her. The woman was beautiful, but her coloring was a bit off, and her eyes looked like they had been crying for days.

“Can you tell me where I am? I can’t remember a thing that happened before I passed out! And then I woke up here!” Jared said.

“You don’t belong here” she whispered.

“No shit” he replied a bit annoyed “I asked you where I am, so I can figure out how to go home!”

“I don’t have a home” she replied “All these houses you see, they’re for the others. I wish I had one of my own!”

“Look lady, I’m really sorry for you being homeless and all, but are you gonna help me or not? I just wanna get out of here!”

“You know, you would be homeless too if you stayed here. But you don’t. Not yet.”

“Who said I would ever want to live in this goddamn place” Jared said while getting away from her. What a nutjob, he thought.

The woman drifted further, and looked like she had a greater need for help than he did, mumbling aimlessly with a confused look on her face.

While walking a bit more, Jared finally spotted a house which had light coming out of the windows. While getting closer, the sign at the front door showed that this was not a house. It was a bar. Now we’re talking.

When he entered, he was unpleasantly surprised. The place looked like a grandma’s house, old dainty furniture, rose patterns everywhere and a pink coffee machine. But, it was this or hitting the road again, and he would kill for a drink.

“Hit me up with whatever you got” Jared said “Where are the customers man? This place is pretty much dead if you ask me. Why don’t you go home?”

“Have you been outside?” the bartender smirked “Anyway, name’s Damon, nice to meet you. What’s yours?”

“You know what, I have no idea” Jared muttered.

“It’s ok, it’s not so important anyway. I kinda gave myself my name too. Couldn’t exactly recall it and this one had a certain ring to it. Drink’s ready!” Damon exclaimed.

“Whoa, this is shit. Sorry man, but it has no taste! Like the owner of this place if I may add. Why the fuck would someone decorate a bar like this?”

“Hmm I don’t know man. It feels kinda homey to me. As a matter of fact” Damon’s eyes beamed as if he remembered something important “that’s why I don’t go home even though there are no customers. I live here.”

“Suit yourself. Anyway, what is this town called? I want to figure out how to go home, even though I’m not sure I remember where that is now.”

“You’re at Midnight Hollow. Do you want to read a newspaper? Might as well search for the train and bus schedules, something could ring a bell.”

“I’ve never heard of Midnight Hollow before. Then again, I might have forgotten it too. Well, that sounds reasonable. Thanks man.”

He reluctantly approached a rose-patterned chair to read his newspaper. Above it, there was a simple painting with a house. It read:

Home is where the heart is.

You don’t say, Jared laughed inside at the lack of profoundness. What a cheesy thing to hang onto a wall. He started reading the newspaper, but there were no schedules, no news, nothing. Only articles about awards and scheduled events for the owner of the Raven house.

Who the hell is this, he must run the place. Couldn’t hurt to pay him a visit. “Hey, thanks again for your help man, I appreciate it!” Jared shouted at Damon, before realizing there was nobody there.

Rose waited by Jared’s side for what seemed like forever, even though only a couple of days had passed. She would always talk to him, the doctor said it could help.

She would tell him about their life together when he would wake up and how happy they were going to be, this time for good. And she was careful never to cry in front of him.

But his health was not improving, in fact he seemed to sink deeper and deeper into the darkness.

After a lot of searching, Jared finally located the house he was searching for. It was pretty big, and that only enforced his belief that someone powerful was living there. As he went closer, he saw a woman standing at the front porch.

“Hey, excuse me!” he shouted “Is this the Raven house?”

The woman didn’t even turn her head. Instead, she started moving to the door.

“Hey lady!” Jared insisted “I need to know if this is the Raven house, can you please help me?”

As the door was closing behind her, a man appeared out of nowhere.

“Aaah, welcome my friend. You must excuse my wife, she’s a bit sucked into her own world sometimes. How can I help you?”

“Is this the Raven house? I believe whoever stays there can help me. I don’t remember my name, where I came from or where I’m supposed to go. And as time passes, it seems even harder to remember anything at all” Jared replied.

“Well, memory is overrated if you ask for my opinion” the man said “But maybe I can help you. Although, to tell you the truth, you seem pretty exhausted. Do you want to stay for dinner? My wife cooks wonderfully, and you’ll get to meet my two boys. Lovely kids, if I may say so myself. They’re not here now, probably out playing. But they’ll be here in time for dinner.”

This didn’t seem like a bad idea at all. But before he got a chance to reply, he heard a voice, more like a whisper. “I told you, you don’t belong here. Why don’t you leave?”

What is she talking about, Jared thought. I have no idea where I’m supposed to go. But something about her seemed warm and familiar.

“Well? Are you coming for dinner or not?” the man said. Although Jared did not want to waste an invitation to food and possibly a warm bed, for some reason he could not make up his mind. A part of him was strongly drawn into this house, but another part was screaming danger.

“…Well?” the man repeated.

“I’m sorry” Jared finally mumbled “I have to go”. He followed the woman who had already started walking without him.

“You’re welcome anytime!” the man shouted.

“Wait!” he said. “Do I know you? I feel like we have already met.”

The woman didn’t answer and simply stopped walking.

Jared looked around. Although there was not much diversity of scenery at this place, he was pretty sure this was the spot he woke up.

“Wait… why am I back here? Man, I can’t believe it! Did I just end up where I started? What the hell am I back here for?”

Suddenly, a golden glow was cast all over the place, almost blinding him. He managed to catch a last glimpse of the woman who simply whispered “You’re back.”

PS: I know this was a bit creepy and overly dramatic, but first, I couldn’t add much drama only to a hospital (not many poses around!) and second, I wanted so badly to make this (credits for the idea go to the Sopranos – major fan here)! If you think this was too much or meh, then by all means let me know! πŸ™‚ The next chapter – within this week – will be normal, I promise! πŸ˜€ Thank you for reading! ❀

  1. Wow, what happened?! At first I thought the gangsters had dragged him to some strange place… but he’s actually stuck in some kind of dream world??? Or a world between life and death? This is very interesting. I wonder who that woman is- and wasn’t that Jared’s father? I hope the ending is him waking up…
    Great chapter πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you so much! 😊
The gangsters just beat him up and left him for dead…which he almost was, you’re right!
It was Jared’s father! The woman kinda looks like Rose, don’t you think? Hmmm πŸ˜‰
The next chapter will be up sooner than usual! πŸ˜„

  2. This was quite an interesting chapter! I wonder why Jared didn’t recognise his father at all, and that girl looks a bit like Rose… it’s almost like an alternate dimension! Is that Jared’s mother, then? I can’t wait to find out more! And he better wake up, Rose would be so so devastated…
    Awesome chapter 😊

    1. Thank you so much! πŸ˜€ Jared’s mother could be the redhead woman, if it’s indeed some kind of afterworld πŸ™‚ The next chapter will be up very soon, and I promise no more of this strange world πŸ˜‰

    1. Hmmm could be Rose’s mother if that place was in fact some kind of afterlife…or a distorted image of Rose herself in Jared’s mind while in his coma!
I doubt we’ll see her again though, at least anytime soon! πŸ˜‰

  3. This chapter was so good! At first, I thought I missed a chapter or something but then I kept reading and I started to understand. I really like what you did with the dream world thing and him being in the hospital. That was very creative and a wonderful addition to your story! If he knows people in this coma-like state, then who is Damon? Has Jared met him before? I can’t wait for the next chapter.

    1. Thank you so much! ❀ I'm really glad you liked it (I was a bit unsure as whether to post it or not because it's so different from the others)!
Maybe Damon existed in Jared's mind as a combination of several people he has met… or maybe he just existed in the afterworld (when I wrote the chapter, I read the myth of Damon and Phidias – or Pythias: I liked that connection with his name!) Damon has played his part though! πŸ˜‰

  4. I loved this chapter!!
At first I thought that Sinbad and his gang took Jared to some creepy part of the woods. But then you flashed to Rose in the hospital, and I was like whoa. Mind blown!!!
Then he meets Damon, and then sees his Dad. But doesn’t remember his dad. And we don’t see his mom’s face!
    Mind Blown!!!

                  1. I loved Rome. It’s a modern city, then you turn a corner and there are a bunch of ancient ruins. Same with Athens. I couldn’t pick a favorite (even though Roman Holiday is one of my favorite movies).
If you ever make it to the USA, and you need a tour guide let me know!

  5. I like the supernaturalness and AU-ness of it so no worries. When his dad showed up, my first reaction was, “Jared! Punch him! Hard!” But no dice. Jared has no memories. Interesting and creative way to represent what’s happening to Jared while unconscious. Was definitely not expecting it!

I think I’ve just caught up. O_O How did that happen? Rabbit hole. This story is a rabbit hole. Looking forward to a new chapter!

    1. Well, maybe he kinda pictured his dad the way he wished he was. But what good is it if he doesn’t even recognize him..!
Thank you so much for reading all these chapters and for all your lovely comments! ❀
I'm so glad you liked my story πŸ™‚
The next chapter will be up soon, probably Thursday (unfortunately I could never follow a schedule)!
Looking forward for your next chapter too, I need more of The book of Karri (and Dominic)! ❀

  6. Woah! This chapter was crazy good! At first I thought I’d missed something as well but when I saw Rose in the hospital it all clicked. Midnight Hollow is quite spooky and I freaked when his dad showed up! I hope Jared wakes up soon but it was interesting to see the people in this world (especially the pretty lady who resembles another pretty lady we are quite familiar with *cough* Rose *cough*) Can’t wait to see what happens next πŸ˜„

  7. I really liked this! it has a bit of a mystical quality about it, and I wonder if it’s his sort of coma-imagination, or if he was really in some between world! Though I’m glad he seems to be waking up, it would be awful for Rose if he hadn’t. Can’t they just be together forever now?! D:

    1. Thank you so much! πŸ˜€ Who knows what this world really was… but I couldn’t keep Jared away from Rose for very long! Hmmm, there’s juuust a little more drama ahead (hope I’m not turning this story into a soap lol)! But hopefully things will turn out well for them eventually! πŸ˜‰
